Kristyn & James

113 Days To Go!

A Sweet Beginning

It started the way many good stories do—with a mutual friend insisting, “You two really need to meet.”

Kristyn Tedford Miller and James Heller were both skeptical, but polite enough not to say so. Still, when the introductions were finally made, something in the timing felt… right.

For their first date, they chose Garozzo’s—a place with just enough charm to take the edge off first-date nerves, or so James hoped. Kristyn walked in looking beautiful, but noticeably nervous, absentmindedly twisting her hair every few minutes. James found it endearing, though he tried not to stare too long whenever she did it.

Dinner went smoothly—good conversation, easy laughs, and that rare sense that the person across the table wasn’t a stranger but someone familiar. But when they walked out to the parking lot, Kristyn led him to her mom’s car. James smiled politely, but inside his brain whispered:

Does she… not have a car?

He shook it off, deciding it was far too early for logistical concerns.

Later that night, Kristyn called her best friend Katie. The moment Katie answered, she didn’t say hello—she simply said, “Well??”

Kristyn, smiling without even realizing it, replied:

“I like this one.”

And she did.

The dates continued—Fridays, sometimes Saturdays. But after a few weeks, it became obvious that one evening a week wasn’t enough. They wanted more time—more conversations, more shared meals, more laughter about little things that only made sense to the two of them.

James quickly learned two important facts about Kristyn:

She had a sweet tooth.

Key lime pie was basically her love language.

Before long, he was showing up at her doorstep carrying one. Then another. Then he just started keeping an informal rotation going. Each delivery earned him a smile that made him want to buy out every bakery in town.

As they grew closer, spending time together became the best part of each week. They talked about their daughters—stories that made the other laugh, nod, or shake their head in sympathy. Eventually, the decision felt natural: it was time to introduce the families. A sign that this wasn’t just a string of nice dates or shared desserts—this was becoming something real.

It was around this time that James was introduced to another important piece of Kristyn’s world:

The Springdale 8.

A group of lifelong friends who had grown up together, stayed together, and built a bond out of old stories, endless laughter, and the kind of loyalty you can’t manufacture. They were the type who could tell the same story twenty times, and it only got funnier. They showed up for each other—birthdays, hardships, celebrations, and those random nights when someone just needed their people.

Kristyn was a core part of this circle. And when she brought James into it, it meant something. The group welcomed him in the way only a tight-knit crew can—curious at first, teasing a little, and ultimately embracing him as one of their own. For James, it was another sign that what they were building wasn’t just dating… it was becoming a life.

And somewhere between Garozzo’s, key lime pies, meeting the Springdale 8, and all those nights they didn’t want to end, James and Kristyn realized what their mutual friend had seen from the very beginning:

Some people don’t just fit into your life.

They make your life better—sweeter, even.

Just like key lime pie.
